Planning to RunBSD
Posted on di 21 oktober 2025 in runbsd
After my interest in OpenBSD was renewed a couple of years ago, the idea was to replace existing things with OpenBSD things here and there. So in my homelab both the ingress and egress web proxies #RUNBSD. And there is ofcourse virtual server Petpuffy, serving a couple of websites using the offering by OpenBSD.Amsterdam.
Nice, but you spend time contemplating with yourself if for problem A, B or C, OpenBSD is the right answer. For some people this could be a binary issue, always resulting in a yes or no. But being the nuanced and unstable me, the question varies on the day of week, how much caffeine is in my blood and how much I've had to deal with systemd on a single day.
So while I was laying awake at night somewhere in Verona over the weekend it dawned on me: I would #RUNBSD as a complete(*) parallel universe.
There is already Petpuffy running OpenBSD, serving this website.

And there is Thinkpad Abraracourcix running OpenBSD, as an alternative desktop system.

So I created this quick list of things I consider in scope right now and will see how far I can get in my spare time over the coming weeks/months.

The quick steps were creating a separate runbsd VLAN and a connected runbsd Wifi ESSID. And a proper domain name, that will maybe serve some purpose along the way: runbsd.eu.
The VLAN is connected to the Internet via my OPNsense firewall, which I deemed #runbsd enough for this purpose. Running a separate OpenBSD for this is ofcourse possible. But it will be clear cut with not much to be learned for me, so I'm sticking with this solution for now.
(*) no it will not involve me rebuilding the parallel version of the Entire Internet.
